" Beautiful quality rods. Soft tip but shuts down so you can pull. Also they had a wood grain material on the reel seat. It looked like real wood. I had mine for over 35yrs. It is still a beauty IMO. They where great just too much competition. Quality for what they charged put them out of business. -Richard(BDOutdoors)

I found one on EBay for about $100 and although it didnt come with a reel, it was easy to find all the parts old-stock (inexpensive) to get this rod ready to fish. This rod is only designed to pull small to medium sized fish, and overloading will surely snap this thin & light rod - but there are other variations of the Contender Ranger which are able to support the weight of some slightly bigger ocean catches. Fishing rod technology has obviously gained since the 1980s, but the attention to build quality of old US-made products like this keeps this rod functioning still decades later ! Looking for domestically manufactured fishing rods is a great way to keep money out of the hands of outsourcing companies - and buying secondhand is always a great way to save money !
